Energy & Carbon dashboard overview

Step 1: Energy and Carbon Dashboard

The Energy and Carbon Dashboard is a comprehensive tool designed to track, analyse, and optimize the energy consumption and carbon emissions across a building portfolio. This dashboard is crucial for building managers and sustainability officers aiming to improve energy efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of their properties.

Energy Consumption Data:
  1. The dashboard displays total energy consumption across different buildings in the portfolio, offering a detailed, building-by-building breakdown. Users can view data on a monthly basis, with flexibility to focus on specific buildings or the entire portfolio.
  2. Users can filter the data by various parameters, such as energy usage, intensity, spend, and more, to gain deeper insights into the energy performance of each building.
Graphical Analysis:
  1. The dashboard provides visual representations of energy usage, helping users quickly identify trends, anomalies, and potential areas for improvement. For instance, a noticeable peak in energy usage might signal an operational issue or an opportunity for efficiency upgrades.
  2. By selecting specific dates, users can review a 12-month retrospective view, allowing for a comprehensive analysis of annual energy consumption patterns.
Usage Metrics:
  1. Absolute Usage: This metric shows the total energy consumed across all buildings in the portfolio, providing a clear picture of overall energy demands.
  2. Intensity Usage: This calculates energy use per square meter, offering insights into the efficiency of energy consumption relative to the size of each building. This metric is particularly useful for identifying buildings that may have lower total usage, but are less efficient on a per square meter basis.
Time Period Comparison:
  1. The dashboard allows users to compare energy usage across different time frames, whether annually, quarterly, or even daily. This feature is valuable for tracking improvements, identifying seasonal patterns, or spotting unexpected increases in energy usage.
Breaking Down Energy Sources:
Energy consumption is categorized into:
  1. Electricity: Includes both purchased and on-site generated electricity (e.g., from solar panels).
  2. Fuels: Typically refers to gas used for heating purposes.
  3. District Heating: Centralized energy supplied for heating.
  4. Each category can be analysed individually to understand the source of energy consumption and to make informed decisions about potential improvements or transitions to renewable energy sources.
Monitoring Water and Waste:
  1. The dashboard also includes sections for tracking water usage and waste production. Water usage is measured in cubic meters, while waste data might vary depending on client reporting. However, the level of detail available in these sections depends on the completeness of client-provided data.
Evaluating Carbon Dioxide Emissions:

The Carbon Dioxide (CO2) section is essential for understanding the portfolio’s environmental impact. It provides:
  1. Total CO2 Emissions: Overall emissions for the entire portfolio as well as individual buildings.
  2. Emissions per Square Meter: This metric helps compare the carbon efficiency of different buildings, highlighting areas where improvements can be made.

Step 2: Using the Pathway Tool

The Pathway Tool is an advanced feature that projects future CO2 emissions based on current energy data and planned sustainability projects. It includes several critical elements:

Building Performance Line: Represents the current CO2 emissions per square meter for a building.
Target Line: Indicates the allowed emissions based on regional guidelines or specific targets for the building.
Simulated Performance: Offers a forecast of how planned sustainability measures will affect future emissions, helping to visualize the potential impact of energy efficiency projects and renovations.

This tool is crucial for long-term planning, allowing users to ensure their buildings meet future sustainability targets and regulations.

Step 3: Stranded Buildings Analysis

The Stranded Buildings tool helps users identify buildings at risk of becoming "stranded" — that is, buildings that will exceed allowable emissions levels unless significant interventions are made. The tool provides:

Stranding Risk Analysis: A visual representation of the percentage of buildings at risk of becoming stranded over time, based on current performance and future projections.

Building-Specific Data: Details on each building's projected year of stranding, along with information about the fund, portfolio, sector, and area. Users can filter and sort this data to prioritize buildings for energy upgrades or other interventions.

This analysis is vital for proactive management, helping ensure compliance with future regulations and avoiding the financial and operational risks associated with stranded assets.
